Changes in Film Technology - Research

Tuesday, 25th, July

Changes In Distribution Technology:
-Filmmakers can add special effects or fix parts of a film in real time
-Social Media can promote films and spread the info about it to target audiences much easier and faster
-COVID-19 has caused a major shift in the use of online streaming services
-Enables smaller filmmakers to gain more traction in the success of their films
-People can view films the day they release without going to a theatre, can cause damage for box office revenue

Changes Technology:
-Anyone can produce film, whereas people used to have to take specialised courses
-With less people trained in film there's poorer quality in movies
-Old Media (posters, billboards), New Media (Anything to do with Technology)
-Look at 'Avatar' case study and see if they have a website, or have done a collab
-Email lists can be used to target a certain audience, subscribers can cause more hype
-Forms of piracy "File Sharing Threatens the Film Industry"
-Instant Feedback = Barbie
-The Sound of Freedom = The media saying it's bad, audiences saying is good
-Streaming on the rise = Can relate to Audiences and Ownership
-Drones, 3D printing
-Film, a small scratch could ruin a scene, Digital, files are easy to manipulate and access
-Animation = Hand drawn vs Digitally created (Motion capture)
-Special effects vs VFX
-Crowdfunding

Technology In Film:

1) Note down specific changes in technology below and films that have utilized this change in technology...
-Chemical film has developed into digital
-We've transitioned from chemical's to pixels
-SONY developed the consumer-available CCD Camcorder

2) What has been the exclusive production, distribution and exhibition format for over 100 years?
-Film --> Edit --> Recolour / VFX Effects --> Distribution

3) What is going to replace 35mm film?
-Digital camera's, and Digital processing technology
-SONY CCD Camcorders
-RED ONE Digital cameras

4) Note down key quotes from directors regarding digital and film production and exhibition:
-"Today in this era, you also have to be a bit of a technician and you have to know the equipment, and it's really important for DP's to understand the entire length of the image chain, from accquisition to exhibition" - David Stump

-"There was a joy for many many years for us to be the genies on set, it's why we love daily's, we'd all go we'd act we'd light, we'd do what we loved to do, and then the next morning it'd come back from the lab and we'd go 'wow', look at what we've got. It was magic." - Sandi Sissel

-"What I didn't like about film, was that feeling midway through the day, end of the day, 'did we get anything? I don't even remember', it's like painting with the lights off." - Robert Rodriguez

-"Grains of film, they're just constantly moving, and so the result is this kind of fuzziness. Whereas with a pixel camera it's a very finite, accurate, exact thing." - David Tattersall

-"The quality of film was terrible in a theatre, and anybody in Hollywood they think, 'oh it's not that bad on the camera', they never go into a theatre and see it in real theatre" - George Lucas

5) How is digital processed?
-As light enters the camera, it hits a sensor of pixels and generates electronic charges, which are then converted into digital data, representing an image.
-While Filmmakers were still using film cameras the film would be processed through a machine and converted into a digital format of "ones and zeroes"

6) How does the documentary discuss the production and post production process?
-"It's like magic, it's insane with the technology we've developed"
-It all takes time, but it's worth it
-"It's an art that was only known to a few, until consumer CCD camera's have become a thing"

7) How is digital helping or hindering film production, post production and exhibition?
-Digital processing allows filmmakers to see their shots instantly rather than waiting until the next day.
-It allows more scope to be creative because it's easier to test creative boundaries

8) Note down key quotes from editors regarding digital post production:
-"Has editing gotten better because there's infinite choice, I'm not so sure, in fact I'm pretty sure there's a lot of movies that have gotten worse, because you manipulate it to death, we may have lost something." - Lorenzo DI Bonaventura
-"There's no limit to what you can do"
-"You couldn't shoot the image, you would create the image on a computer" - Lana Wachowski
-"Timing was a very frustrating process on photo chemical, it was just very crude, you could hardly do anything, that's the whole thing about DI, I could go in and circle little things, make the face look a little redder, you could bring out the background a bit, I was in heaven, I said this was amazing, I can do anything to fix this movie." - George Lucas
-"It's always a huge disappointment now for me to see a film print, like it's depressing, it's not sharp it doesn't have any snap, it's shaking, it's dirty, I hate it."

9) What is the impact of digital technology and what does the future hold?
-It can provide anyone with the opportunity to create a film without an expensive and major budget, especially with the release of SONY's affordable CCD Camcorder.
-It has provided directors and writers with more creativity in terms of how certain shots are taken.
-"Everybody can make a movie now, movies everywhere, that's a good thing", "I don't think so actually, there's less good, there's more bad, cause everybody's able to do whatever they wanna do, there's demarcation of it, fantastic, but I think my kids will suffer, they will not have the quality that we had growing up, cause there isn't somebody there, there isn't a tastemaker involved", "Wow" - Keanu Reeves & Lorenzo DI Bonaventura
